After weeks of speculation, former U.S. Senator Doug Jones is preparing to officially enter the 2026 Alabama governor’s race, setting up a high-profile contest against current U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville.

The development was first revealed on The Voice of Alabama Politics, where host Bill Britt reported that sources close to Jones confirmed he will file candidacy paperwork with the Alabama Secretary of State in the coming week. AL.com has also independently verified Jones’ intention to run.

Jones Confirms Long-Rumored Plans

Jones had hinted at a possible run earlier this month during a Birmingham forum hosted by U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell, telling attendees to “stay tuned” when asked about a gubernatorial bid.

Jones previously served in the U.S. Senate from 2018 to 2021 before losing his seat to Tuberville, a former Auburn University football coach who has since become Alabama’s senior senator. Tuberville announced his own run for governor earlier this year and currently leads the field.

Polls Show Tuberville Ahead

A recent Cygnal poll of 605 likely voters indicates Tuberville holds a strong advantage over Jones. The Republican senator has also raised more than $7 million, surpassing the fundraising pace set by Gov. Kay Ivey at this stage during her previous campaign.

Primary Field Taking Shape

Other candidates who have filed campaign finance reports include Republican Ken McFeeters and Democrats Will Boyd and Chad “Chig” Martin. Alabama’s party primaries are scheduled for May 19, 2026.

With Jones now stepping into the race, Alabama voters can expect a competitive and closely watched governor’s contest heading into 2026.
